CHAPTER ELEVEN

Light streamed in through the threadbare curtains covering the hotel room window. I blinked several times, attempting to get the sleep out of my eyes. It took me a moment to place where I was.

Then the craziness of the last couple days slapped me right across the face. I sat up, shuffling back to lean against the headboard.

A blanket sat neatly on the end of the bed, a pillow on top of it. I patted around for my burner phone, just to check the time. When I finally found it, the battery was dead.

I squinted at the window. That was a lot of light. I must have slept in a lot longer than I should have. “Travis?” I croaked out, my throat incredibly dry.

No answer, but the shower was running.

I pawed around for my service belt, just in case it wasn’t him in the shower. Sure, I couldn’t think of anyone else it would be, but stranger things had happened in the last twenty-four hours.

There. My body relaxed a little at the coolness of the grip of my weapon. My hand bumped something else, metal and cool, but strange.

The bracelet. I’d clipped it on to my belt last night and forgotten. Finally awake enough to not think someone who wanted to murder me had gotten distracted and decided to take a shower instead, I pulled the belt over and took a closer look at the thing. Last night I’d been so exhausted I’d basically collapsed. Looking at the bracelet had been the last thing on my mind.

But now I had a moment to breathe. The bracelet looked just as terrible today as it had yesterday in the museum. I’d only gotten a quick look at it then, before Wenslo had busted the glass, and the thing looked even more wicked now as I studied it. The spikes were long, and the space between them far too small for an arm to fit without the spikes digging into flesh. Notches and grooves covered the metal, and didn’t look like they were just for decoration, but I couldn’t come up with a reason for them.

Maybe I didn’t want to know what they were there for.

I ran a finger over the metal, and a shiver went up my spine. Something felt… wrong about this thing. Dangerous. How could a bracelet feel dangerous? Maybe I was just making things up because of how Wenslo had acted when we’d taken it, but I didn’t think so. I had a ton more questions now than I’d had before.

A quick glance around the room showed that Travis must have run over to a gas station and bought breakfast burritos and coffee. While he was busy, I took a quick peek at my stitches. Yep, the wound was still there. The light had faded, nearly gone. It pulsed, completely blocked by my skin for a millisecond at a time.

That had to be good, right?

Yes. It had to be good.

I winced as I sat up, my abs protesting the movement.
